About Multiplicity: Studies, Series and Prints in the Masterworks Collection
Multiplicity: Studies, Series and Prints in the Masterworks Collection in the Butterfield Gallery and Mezzanine Gallery
The Permanent Collection at Masterworks Museum of Bermuda Art houses over 1,600 objects which share a common focus on Bermuda, allowing for a multiplicity of interpretations of the island. Demonstrating the richness of this collection are the "collections within the collection", groupings of artworks by an artist which manifest their repeated engagement with Bermuda as subject and idea. Multiplicity: Studies, Series and Prints in the Masterworks Collection will highlight important groupings within the Permanent Collection, marking a unique opportunity for associated works by a single artist to be displayed and considered as ensembles on the walls of the Butterfield and Mezzanine Galleries.
Key featured artists include Winslow Homer, Albert Gleizes, Houghton Cranford Smith, May Middleton, Edwina Sandys, Frank Stella and Jennifer Bartlett. In addition to their extensive representation in the Masterworks Permanent Collection, they are also notable for creating art invested in the concepts of process, repetition and seriality. Multiplicity: Studies, Series and Prints in the Masterworks Collection will further explore these topics through the displayed works, encouraging a new perspective on Bermuda, the Masterworks Permanent Collection and the nature of art.
Multiplicity: Studies, Series and Prints is curated by Dr Sara Thom, Curatorial Researcher at Masterworks Museum of Bermuda Art and curator of past exhibitions Looking Out: Canadian Artists in Bermuda, Isabel McLaughlin: Finding Form and Radical Blooms. Support for the exhibition is generously provided by the Christian Humann Foundation.
