Any tennis historian will tell you: tennis as we know it in the US wouldn't exist without Bermuda, thanks to Mary Ewing Outerbridge, who brought tennis to America. That's why USTA and the Bermuda Tourism Authority have partnered on a multi-year endeavor to showcase the island's love – no pun intended – of the sport, and vice-versa.
Join the fun with the first-ever Courts & Shorts Weekend, part of the ongoing celebration of Bermuda’s place as an outstanding tennis destination for fans, players, enthusiasts and historians. From a ticketed tennis exhibition featuring former US Open singles champions to a kids’ day featuring tennis legends, rising tennis stars and former Bermuda Olympians, the event is a must for lovers of all things tennis.
Can't-Miss Events for Tennis Lovers
Net Generation Kids' Day
The local community joins the fun with Net Generation Kids' Day, a free, open-to-the-public youth tennis clinic at W.E.R. Joell Tennis Stadium with local and international tennis champs alike on-hand to coach. Local kids of all ages and abilities are invited to participate under the USTA’s Net Generation umbrella – smaller courts, shorter racquets and lower-bouncing balls are designed to help create a safe, fun learning environment. Arantxa Sánchez, Luke Jensen, Jan-Michael Gambill and rising American stars will help coach, and a contingent of accomplished Bermuda-based athletes will be there to help cheer on the budding champions, including Bermuda Sports Hall of Fame soccer player Clyde Best, three-time Olympian Patrick Singleton and more.
(Bonus: The equipment your kids train with will then be donated to Bermuda to further these efforts among the island's youth.)
Courts & Shorts Exhibition
A spirited showcase of global tennis talent, the Courts & Shorts Exhibition features top players from around the world – including former world No. 1s Andy Roddick and Arantxa Sánchez. These US Open Singles Champions will take to the court at Coral Beach & Tennis Club. Joining them on the roster are 1993 French Open Doubles Champion Luke Jensen, former world No. 6 and seven-time WTA singles title-winner Chanda Rubin, former world No. 14, Jan-Michael Gambill and rising American stars. Experience the thrill of world-class tennis on the island that shaped its fate – and interact with the champions who continue to foster its legacy. VIP experience packages are available for fans, which include a Friday evening reception, preferred access to the exhibition matches and a post-exhibition reception.
Bermuda Breeze Championships
The events coincide with the Bermuda Breeze Championships, a USTA Super Category II tournament, that will take place at Coral Beach & Tennis Club. It’s anticipated that the tournament will draw more than 100 players this year.
