Bermudian Artist Jahbarri Wilson Featured for Art Month with a Solo Exhibition at The Loren
Opening October 1, to mark the beginning of the Bermuda Tourism Authority’s Art Month, Bermudian artist Jahbarri Wilson will present a solo exhibition, Meet Us In The Onion Patch, in the Maree Lounge at The Loren. The exhibition is the fourth in a continuing partnership between Masterworks Museum and The Loren, designed to showcase local artists beyond traditional gallery spaces.
“One of our more important roles as a museum is to create more opportunities for artists to share their voices,” said Risa Hunter, Director of Masterworks. “By extending beyond our own walls and collaborating with partners like The Loren we’re able to provide platforms for Bermudian artists such as Jahbarri to engage new audiences and further their artistic practice.”
Wilson’s vivid canvases blend abstraction with loose figuration, creating works that feel both intentional and spontaneous. His practice is driven by curiosity—about Bermudian history, global cultures, and the expressive possibilities of painting.
One of the earliest works on view, Star’erfolk, was created publicly during Bermuda’s first Art Month in 2023 and later exhibited at the Bermuda National Gallery’s 2024 Bermuda Biennial. The painting introduces Wilson’s recurring themes of journey, discovery, and self-reflection, seen in the figures casting lines from a vessel beneath a wide, star-filled sky.
In 2024, Wilson received a Bermuda Arts Council grant for an artist residency in Peru. There, he explored local traditions, learning to source and process natural pigments as well as foraging clay. This experience reflects his broader approach: drawing inspiration from his travels, building cultural connections, and highlighting the shared threads of human experience. Wilson views creation as a form of play—mental, physical, emotional, and spiritual—that allows him to explore the essence of Bermuda and its people.
Meet Us In The Onion Patch — a symbol that has dual and at times conflicting meanings for Bermudians — captures the dualities running throughout Wilson’s work: personal versus communal; physical versus spiritual; playful versus reflective; deliberate versus spontaneous.
“At The Loren, we believe in creating a platform where local artistry can flourish alongside global voices,” said Penny Liebman Aaron, Curator and Art Advisor to The Loren Hotels. “Jahbarri’s exhibition embodies the spirit of Art Month by inviting both residents and visitors to see Bermuda anew through the lens of his imagination.”
“Art Month is about turning discovery into itinerary,” said Jasmine Furbert, Director of Visitor Experience at the Bermuda Tourism Authority. “Exhibitions like Jahbarri Wilson’s don’t just reveal the soul of Bermuda; they give visitors a reason to explore, meet our makers, and stay a little longer. We’re proud to support partnerships that grow the island’s creative economy and invite the world into our arts community.”
The exhibition will be on view from October 1-31, 2025, with a public opening reception –the opening event of Art Month – on Wednesday, October 1, from 6-8pm in the Maree Lounge, at The Loren.
