Bermuda Tourism Authority Brings Focus to Golf as Part of Tourism Recovery Efforts

AJGA partnership to reap economic, community engagement rewards for Bermuda
The announcement of BTA’s four-year partnership with the American Junior Golf Association (AJGA) offers economic benefits from hosting the event and global media exposure to the island, along with exciting opportunities for youth players. The Bermuda Junior Championship not only will attract top international junior golfers, but will also be open to young Bermudians keen to try their talents in a world-class event. The event takes place January 15–18, 2021 at Port Royal Golf Course.

“The Bermuda Junior Championship will generate $1.4 million for the Bermuda economy over the next four years and development opportunity for Bermuda’s junior golfers,” said Minister of Tourism & Transport Zane DeSilva. “We applaud the BTA’s efforts to secure this event for Bermuda and AJGA’s dedication to the overall growth and development of young men and women who aspire to earn college golf scholarships through competitive junior golf. We look forward to welcoming everyone to experience the famed Port Royal Golf Course during the January 2021 inaugural event and beyond.”

Aligning with Bermuda’s National Tourism Plan to attract a new generation of traveller via select sports, including golf, one of the goals of AJGA is its mission to attract a new generation of golfer. That focus supports the BTA commitment to leverage sports opportunities to positively impact the local community in myriad ways to inspire youth development in golf while positively contributing to the local economy.

“This new partnership with AJGA is the result of our dedicated BTA sports tourism team, along with the collaboration of Sean Sovacool, Tournament Director of the Bermuda Championship, and Greg Maybury, General Manager of Port Royal Golf Course, who continued to work closely with us to win this new piece of business while Bermuda’s borders were restricted during the pandemic,” said BTA Director of Sports Business Development, Hazel Clark. “We’re thrilled to bring this event to Bermuda, as we continue to establish the island’s position as a leading sports destination.”
