The Bermuda Heritage Museum

Opened in 1998, the Bermuda Heritage Museum charts the history of enslavement in Bermuda and honours the social, cultural and political accomplishments of black Bermudians, from pre-emancipation to the present day. Located in a 19th-century building that once housed an order of the Friendly Society – which lended a helping hand to blacks after emancipation – the museum has many artefacts, photographs and installations that memorialize such important events as the 1959 Theatre Boycott, which ended segregation in Bermuda. The museum, located in the Town of St. George, is also a stop on the African Diaspora Heritage Trail, which traces Bermuda’s legacy of enslavement across the island.
