Since 1906, Bermuda has been the finish line for the Newport Bermuda Race, a prestigious biannual sailing contest that starts in Rhode Island and barrels across the Atlantic Ocean.

Bermuda's clear waters are home to coral reefs, diverse marine life (including big-game fish) and more than 350 documented shipwrecks. You can also spot migrating humpback whales in March and April.

A replica of a 19th-century sloop, the Spirit of Bermuda, provides sailing experiences for children and travellers around the world.

The Bermuda sloop was developed in Bermuda in the 17th century. It's notable for its raked masts and triangular sails.

Bermuda is relatively close to the U.S. by sea. The island is roughly 650 miles east of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina, which is why Bermuda has long been a popular offshore sailing destination for American East Coast sailors.

Bermuda's Great Sound creates a natural amphitheatre ideal for watching sailing events from several viewpoints around the island. In 2017, the island hosted the 35th America's Cup, presented by Louis Vuitton. Sail GP also set its roots in Bermuda having had their second season in 2022 and returning to the island in 2024.

The Royal Bermuda Yacht Club is the third oldest club holding a Royal Warrant outside of the British Isles.
