Bermuda’s historic gem
Welcome to the Town of St. George – a charming town that was Bermuda’s original capital and, today, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Stepping into St. George is like taking a delightful journey back in time, where centuries of history coexist alongside the day-to-day rhythms of island life. You’ll be captivated by winding pathways worn by hundreds of years of footsteps, picturesque water views, and an atmosphere brimming with stories just waiting to be told. Wander, explore, and soak in every incredible moment in this special corner of our island.
King’s Square
In the heart of St. George you’ll find King’s Square, an historic hub that serves as the town centre. Watch for the famous Town Crier, who often shares entertaining stories of bygone eras and might even invite a few volunteers to try out the ducking stool – we promise, it’s all in good fun! If you happen to be here over the New Year, King’s Square is where you can watch the annual New Year’s Eve Onion Drop – think Times Square’s iconic ball drop at midnight but with – what else? – a Bermuda onion.
As you move around St. George, you’ll also discover a deeply moving and essential part of our island's story: the African Diaspora Heritage Trail. It's a profound journey through sites that illuminate the resilience, struggles, and triumphs of those who shaped Bermuda's culture and history, particularly through the transatlantic slave trade. See Pilot Darrell’s House, named for James Darrell, the first documented Black homeowner in Bermuda. Stop by St. Peter’s Church, where in the vestry, you’ll be able to see the baptismal register from August 1, 1834, when emancipation occurred. There is a line drawn across the page and Black people baptized after August 1 are no longer entered as “slave” or “free”.
Exploring these significant landmarks offers a powerful and deeply personal connection to our past, allowing you to feel the strength and spirit that continues to weave through our community today. It’s a place for reflection, learning, and honouring a vital part of who we are.
Forts, Coves, and Postcard-Worthy Views
Some of Bermuda’s most dramatic stories are told through St. George’s magnificent forts. At Fort St. Catherine, perched on the northeastern tip of the island, you’re invited to explore impressive ramparts, discover secret passages, and take in jaw-dropping views of the coastline and the Atlantic. Gates Fort is a quaint but historically significant battery offering great views of the Town Cut, the channel into the harbour.
When it’s time to take a dip, Tobacco Bay is a gorgeous sheltered cove with incredibly calm, clear waters perfect for snorkelling. Ask a local about Tobacco Bay’s history – from pirate lore to hidden fishing spots, everyone has a different tale about this little beach.
No visit to St. George is complete without stopping by the Unfinished Church. An interruption in construction centuries ago has left us with a breathtaking Gothic ruin that cuts a dramatic backdrop against the sky and an incredibly serene atmosphere. The views from inside its walls are gorgeous, and it’s a perfect place to pause and daydream.
