Bermuda Beaches with Lifeguards
For families, solo travellers, less experienced swimmers, and really anyone dipping into Bermuda’s turquoise waters, beaches with lifeguards bring peace of mind to your day in the sun.

Beyond keeping watchful eyes on the water, lifeguards offer insight into ocean conditions and can point you to the safest places to swim. Whether you're travelling with kids or simply looking to unwind under the comfort of a trained professional, lifeguards can help you fully enjoy the island’s alluring waters.
Lifeguard coverage in Bermuda is seasonal, typically available May through October, from around 10 AM to 6 PM daily. Outside of peak season, lifeguards are generally not on duty, even at popular spots like Horseshoe Bay. But when the weather is good, Bermuda’s beaches are fairly safe – offshore reefs help break up large waves, and serious marine hazards are rare. Keep an eye out for Portuguese Man o’ War early in the season and be aware of rip currents, which are signalled by sandy, churned-up water. If caught in one, be sure to swim parallel to shore.
Ready to find your safe slice of paradise? Here are some of Bermuda’s best beaches with lifeguard coverage.
Horseshoe Bay Beach
Along Bermuda’s famous South Shore, find the island’s most iconic stretch of sand at Horseshoe Bay Beach. With its crescent of pale-pink sand, calm turquoise waters, and dramatic limestone cliffs, it’s one of the most beloved and most photographed beaches on the island. Lifeguards are on duty daily during the high season.
This beach has everything you need: restrooms, changing facilities, concessions, and rentals including towels, beach loungers, snorkelling gear, and boogie boards. At the eastern end of the bay, families especially love Port Royal Cove. Also known as “kiddie beach,” this enclosed bay within Horseshoe Bay keeps the big waves out, making it ideal for small children and babies to play in the shallow, calm water.
Located within South Shore Park, Horseshoe Bay is easily accessible by public transport and connects to nearby beaches via a scenic coastal trail. It’s also a popular spot for local events, including the Bermuda Sandcastle Competition – making it a must-see for first-time and cruise visitors, and returning beachgoers alike.
Clearwater Beach
Before Cooper’s Island Nature Reserve on Bermuda’s northeastern coast, Clearwater Beach is a spacious, laid-back escape with calm, shallow waters perfect for families and younger swimmers. This manmade beach feels wonderfully wild, with plenty of room to spread out, picnic, or relax in peace. Plan transportation before you visit – note when buses run in the area, arrange taxi service, or rent an electric microcar or scooter.
Clearwater Beach offers restrooms, a playground, and the popular Sunjammers Bar and Grill (open seasonally) for snacks and refreshments. Inland, nature lovers can explore nearby walking trails and birdwatching spots within the neighboring nature reserve.
A favourite with locals – especially on weekends – Clearwater Beach is a fantastic place to spend a quiet afternoon, splash in gentle surf, and truly unwind. If you’re seeking natural beauty without the crowds, consider this your best-kept secret.

Turtle Bay Beach
Adjacent to Clearwater Beach lies Turtle Bay – a smaller, quieter cove with shallow, sheltered waters, perfect for young swimmers or anyone craving a peaceful beach day. This hidden gem offers a safe, serene spot for splashing, snorkelling, or simply enjoying a beachside nap. The calm water and gentle slope make it ideal for kids, and snorkellers may even spot the bay’s namesake sea turtles. Note that lifeguard coverage may rotate from Clearwater Beach.
Located just outside the entrance of Cooper’s Island Nature Reserve, Turtle Bay is a local favourite perfect for relaxing away from the crowds. Add in a short nature walk or a bit of birdwatching inland, and you’ve got a low-key adventure wrapped in island tranquility.
John Smith Bay
Up the road in Smith’s Parish, John Smith’s Bay offers a quieter, more relaxed vibe than the island’s busier shores. A favourite among locals, it features a long stretch of soft pink sand – perfect for spreading out your towel and soaking up the sun. Lifeguards are on duty daily during the high season.
Just offshore, colourful reef life makes this spot one of the best bays for casual snorkelling – no boat required. On land, find amenities like restrooms and the seasonal BQ Beach Grill, serving up grilled meats, seafood, and veggies plus classic beach fare and cold drinks.
Other Beaches to Know (Even if No Lifeguards are Present)
While these beaches may not have lifeguard coverage, they’re some of Bermuda’s most breathtaking spots – ideal for confident swimmers and those looking to explore more of the island’s scenic coastline.
Church Bay
A snorkeller’s dream, Church Bay on the South Shore has shallow reefs just offshore that attract angelfish and parrotfish. The reefs also act as a natural wave break, helping to keep conditions calm. Find picnic areas, restrooms, and a seasonal concession stand for snorkel gear and snacks.
Warwick Long Bay
This dramatic stretch of pink sand runs half a mile and is framed by rocky cliffs and a coral outcropping offshore. At Warwick Long Bay, the sunsets and snorkelling are excellent, and nearby trails connect to hidden coves like Jobson’s Cove and Chaplin Bay. Find restrooms, a playground, and a summer lunch cart at South Shore Park.
Elbow Beach
Elbow Beach is a semi-private stretch of beach near some of the island’s top resorts. With soft sand and clear waters, it offers exceptional swimming and snorkelling. Enjoy oceanfront food and drinks at the Lido Complex, which includes Mickey’s Beach Bar and Sea Breeze Lounge and Terrace. Elbow Beach offers great kite surfing in winter and colourful sunsets all year long.

Shelly Bay Beach
Perfect for kids, Shelly Bay near Flatts Village features shallow, calm waters, shade from nearby trees, and a playground and picnic area. A boardwalk winds through a small nature reserve. There’s also a seasonal concession stand called Sunsets Grill & BBQ as well as beach chairs to rent.
Tobacco Bay Beach
In St. George’s, Tobacco Bay is a lively historic beach combining calm, crystal-clear waters with limestone cliffs, great snorkelling, gear rentals, and a full-service beach bar and restaurant. Summer brings bonfires on the beach and other fun-filled celebrations.
Tips for Your Perfect Beach Day
Whether you’re swimming or sunbathing, a little preparation goes a long way toward making your beach day blissfully carefree. Here are a few simple tips to keep in mind:
- Follow posted signs and flags – They let you know if conditions are safe for swimming. A red flag means stay out of the water; a green flag means go ahead and enjoy.
- Swim near a lifeguard – If lifeguards are on duty, stay close. They’re there to help, offer advice, and keep an eye out while you relax.
- Watch the little ones – Even in shallow water, children should always be supervised. Bermudian beaches are family-friendly, but waves and currents can still surprise you.
- Use reef-safe sunscreen – Protect your skin and Bermuda’s delicate marine life by choosing eco-friendly sun protection.
Stay hydrated – While some beaches have concessions or nearby cafes, it’s always a good idea to bring water to beat the heat.
With just a bit of care, your Bermuda beach experience will be safe, sunny, and unforgettable. Explore more beaches and plan the ultimate beach day!
