About All-Ages Workshop: Pop-Up Bookmaking with Zoë Dyson Hedstrom
Join artist Zoë Dyson Hedstrom and learn how to transform ordinary paper into an interactive journal filled with surprises. Participants will hand-stitch their own journal using recycled cardboard covers and fill their pages with simple paper engineering techniques.
Inspired by books, architecture, and storytelling, participants will explore pop-up structures, fold-out pages, envelopes with hidden inserts, zine-making, and the fascinating Turkish map fold. Decorative elements may include miniature slot-together houses, colourful window designs using translucent acrylic panes, and simple embroidered details on paper.
Using found materials and creative construction techniques, each participant will leave with a one-of-a-kind journal ready for sketching, writing, collecting memories, or continuing to develop as an artist's book.
This workshop is offered in association with Visions of the Vernacular: Architecture in the Masterworks Collection, on view in the Butterfield Gallery May 1 – September 12, 2026.
