Tennis in Bermuda

Bermuda plays tennis nearly year-round, but the sweet spot is October through March, when the island's air turns cool and dry. As the island that introduced tennis to the United States in the 1870s, the sport is built into our DNA. Today, courts range from clay to hard surfaces across the island's resorts, clubs, and public facilities.

A Perfect Match

Thanks to a temperate climate, tennis never goes out of season in Bermuda. The only dilemma is deciding whether to play oceanside and contend with a gentle breeze, or opt for an inland court and then take a dip in the pool afterward.

Where to Play

Bermuda's Tennis Legacy

Bermuda’s place in tennis history goes back to 1874, when Mary Outerbridge first encountered the game at Clermont, a private home in Paget Parish. Using equipment brought over from England, she quickly fell in love with the sport, packed a mesh net and racquets into her luggage, and sailed back to New York. There, she set up America’s very first tennis court—an oddly shaped hourglass design on Staten Island—earning her the title "Mother of American Tennis" and cementing Bermuda’s role in launching the game across North America.
