About Resilience: Bermudians of African Descent Tour

Resilience: Bermudians of African Descent In 1616, Bermuda became the first English colony to use enslaved Africans, and slavery would continue on this island until Emancipation on August 1, 1834. This tour focuses on the stories of people of African descent. Walk-in their footsteps and learn of their rebellion, resistance, and resilience.

  • Visit sites along the African Diaspora Heritage Trail.
  • Learn about the first Black man elected to the US House of Representatives who escaped to Bermuda during the American Civil War.
  • Visit one of the only remaining cemeteries for Black people from Bermuda's first centuries.
  • See the first home in Bermuda purchased by a Black person, a member of the largest free Black community before Emancipation.
  • Discover the history of our annual Cup Match Emancipation Celebration.

Explore the hidden gems of St. George's on our 2 hour electric bicycle tour. Discover picturesque beaches, secluded coves, and historic forts that transport you to another world. Your tour will start in the heart of town, at our e-bike hut beside the main town square, with an overview of the history of our UNESCO World Heritage Site. Then, we'll ride up and around to the coast, taking in the gorgeous scenery along the coast.

Cup Match is a beloved annual cricket event in Bermuda, celebrated over the Emancipation Day and Mary Prince Day holiday in late July or early August. This two-day match pits traditional rivals St. George's Cricket Club and Somerset Cricket Club against each other, drawing fervent support from their respective fan bases. 

Beyond the thrilling cricket, Cup Match is a vibrant cultural festival featuring festive gatherings, Crown & Anchor, music, delicious local cuisine, and a strong sense of community. It commemorates the island's emancipation from slavery, making it not just a sporting event but a significant celebration of Bermudian heritage and pride. Whatever you do at the game, be sure to pick a team and show off your Cup Match colours.

Join us for #CampBermuda at the annual Cup Match Cricket Classic at the Somerset Cricket Club. Stop by the campsite and get a taste of an authentic Cup Match atmosphere where you can dance to tunes by our DJ, snap selfies at our photobooth, and cool off with a Goslings Rum Swizzle. 

Tickets to the game can be purchased at the game. Entrance to Camp Bermuda is free and open to island visitors only.

Bermuda Round the Sound Swim

The Round the Sound swim race is an annual open water swimming event that takes place in the beautiful Harrington Sound. This year, there will be more distances on offer to race in including the 10k, 6k, 5k and 800m. 

We do suggest you register early if you wish to be sure of a place. Dock capacity is a constraint that we are unable to modify, so we do not have flexibility to expand numbers if you register late and a distance is full. Limits per distance are:

  • 10k = max 150 swimmers
  • 6k = max 75 swimmers
  • 4k = max 125 swimmers
  • 2k = max 175 swimmers
  • 0.8k = max 125 swimmers

The Visitors Package ($125) includes: 

  • Free Entry to the Pre Race Pasta Dinner (Saturday evening at Grotto Bay Hotel) - $70 without the Visitors Package
  • Bus transport from Grotto Bay to the start location of your race distance
  • Bus transport from Aquarium (after finish of Race) to Grotto Bay
  • Bus transport and supervised swims for open water practice swims prior to Race Day (likely Thursday, Friday, Saturday at 10am)
  • A possibility of a guided Tour of Trunk Island (weather permitting and if occurring, likely as part of the Thursday practice swim trip)
  • Access to the formal Race briefings, including full explanation of the race routes and buoy detail (will have one each evening Thursday, Friday, Saturday)
  • Free access to the Aquarium on Race Day
