Experience Bermuda at its Best with the 20th Anniversary of Harbour Nights
Bermuda’s long-standing tradition of Harbour Nights begins today and runs every Wednesday evening on Front Street in Hamilton. This year marks the 20th anniversary of this one-of-a-kind celebration. The ocean-facing Front Street comes alive with tourists and locals alike. The street radiates energy as it is shut down to vehicles after sunset. Dancers, artists, diners, visitors, families, and vendors all come out to enjoy the festivities.
For the past 20 years, Harbour Nights have been enjoyed on the island by all ages. There is something for everyone, even local shops and restaurants join in the fun and stay open late for the celebrations. Get a taste of Bermuda culture when local vendors and artists display everything from jewelry to handcrafted Gombey dolls. Children can partake in the festivities too with face painting and family-friendly activities.
After taking a stroll along the street, indulge in Bermudian and international specialties, like the popular local fried fish, at one of the many Front Street restaurants. The Bermudian Gombey dancers flood the streets with colourful outfits and rhythmic moves that will keep you dancing all night. Another local favourite is the Bermuda Regiment Band. You can catch them marching down Front Street in full regimental apparel playing pipes and drums.
The start of Harbour Nights coincides with the first voyage of the Veendam, a cruise ship that will be docked right beside Hamilton. It’s the ship’s last year in Bermuda. The festivities will kick off with popular MC Nadanja opening the night, followed by performances from the H & H Gombeys, Carl Rodney, Steel Pan soloist and the Kennel Boys.
“We hope to turn Front Street into Main Street USA and throw the biggest block party Bermuda has ever seen. We are not giving away all of our secrets just yet, but watch this space because it is going to be something very special!” said Chamber EVP Joanne MacPhee.
Harbour Nights has been described as the best way to experience Bermudian culture. Come join the 20th anniversary celebrations this Wednesday. Harbour Nights will run from April 25th until September 5th from 7:00 - 10:00 pm on Front Street in Hamilton. “Harbour Nights is a quintessential part of Bermuda’s way of life and an important part of the summer calendar,” Chamber President Buddy Rego said yesterday.
