In the News: Headlines from America's Cup 2017

The 35th America’s Cup, presented by Louis Vuitton, came to Bermuda in May and June of 2017, leaving a rich collection of press coverage in its wake. From adrenaline-filled racing to Bermuda’s island-style celebrations, the coverage captured the historic event from many angles. Read on for some of the highlights.

As a first-time host of the legendary sailing event, Bermuda became part of America’s Cup history as it welcomed the 35th America's Cup, presented by Louis Vuitton. During the month-long competition, the world’s best sailing teams battled to take home the towering “auld mug” trophy. In the end, challenger Emirates Team New Zealand upset the defending team, ORACLE TEAM USA, and sailed away as champions.

“EMIRATES TEAM NEW ZEALAND IN DRAMATIC CAPSIZE” – YACHTING WORLD

In one of the most memorable moments of the entire competition, the New Zealand team did a “dramatic pitchpole” and capsized in the Great Sound during the semi-finals. Fortunately, the crew was unharmed and the boat was spared from any major structural damage. See the article and video >

The Guardian recounts how the underdog challengers came away with an impressive victory, finding redemption after a crushing defeat in the previous America’s Cup. “PEDAL POWER AND POKER FACES: WHAT DROVE NEW ZEALAND’S AMERICA’S CUP SUCCESS” – THE GUARDIAN

The Guardian explores what “propelled the lesser-funded foiler to victory.” Coming off a crushing defeat in the previous America’s Cup, New Zealand’s veteran skipper Glenn Ashby was able to “channel his own disappointment to drive the new faces of the team forward.” The Kiwis also took a calculated risk in choosing cycling pedestals over the conventional hand-cranked pedestals – and the risk paid off.
